Are We Teaching Our Kids Something They'll Eventually Have to Unlearn?

I recently watched a YouTube interview with legendary UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma. After more than four decades of coaching championship teams and some of the greatest players ever to play the game, he’s earned the right to make people think. One observation, in particular, stayed with me.

Paraphrasing his point, Geno suggested that young children are naturally good teammates. Left to their own devices, they tend to share, include others, celebrate together, and simply enjoy being part of something larger than themselves. Whether they’re building something, inventing a game, or chasing a ball around the yard, they’re often more interested in participating than in distinguishing themselves. Their instinct, at least initially, seems to be connection before comparison.
