The Leadership Question That Never Gets Old

Whenever I speak to a group, I often ask a simple question: Who is the best leader you’ve ever worked for? Whether I’m with CEOs, students, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, or frontline employees, the response is remarkably consistent. People don’t hesitate. They know exactly who comes to mind.
What’s even more interesting is why.
Rarely does anyone begin by describing that leader’s vision, strategic brilliance, or ability to exceed expectations. They don’t talk about revenue growth, market share, or operational excellence, even though those accomplishments may have been very real. Instead, they tell stories about how that leader made them feel.
They describe someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves. Someone who took the time to listen, noticed strengths they hadn’t yet recognized, challenged them because they saw untapped potential, or simply made them feel that their contribution mattered. Long after people have forgotten the quarterly results, they remember how that leader changed the way they saw themselves, and how it inspired them to soar.
