Leaders rarely set out to create an unhealthy team environment.
Quite the opposite. Most work intentionally to build cultures where people trust one another, collaborate effectively, speak candidly, and feel valued. They invest in development, communicate expectations, recognize good work, and encourage open dialogue. By every reasonable measure, they believe they are creating the conditions for people to succeed.
Then something unexpected happens.
One employee describes the team as supportive and collaborative. Another, working alongside the same colleagues, experiences it as guarded and political. One person feels comfortable challenging ideas. Another remains reluctant to speak. The conditions appear to be the same, yet the experiences are remarkably different.
