Growth Changes the Game

There is a moment in the life of a growing company when success begins to look different. The business is larger. More customers, employees, resources, and opportunities join the mix. The organization has become what its founders and early leaders once hoped it might be. Yet work that once seemed relatively simple now takes more effort. A decision that used to take one conversation now requires three. People discover changes later than they should. Two departments leave the same meeting with different understandings of what was decided. Senior leaders find themselves resolving issues they assumed capable people would work out on their own.
It can be tempting to see these developments as signs that something has gone wrong. Often, something has gone right: the company grew. What changed wasn’t necessarily the quality of the people or the leadership. What changed was the environment in which everyone was being asked to perform. As organizations grow, one of their most valuable resources, clarity, becomes harder to maintain.
