What if People Aren't the Problem?

Organizations spend enormous amounts of time and money trying to make people better.
We assess, train, and coach them, develop their leadership skills, and help them become better communicators, collaborators, and decision-makers. When someone struggles, we create a development plan. When a team underperforms, we often identify the individuals who need additional support.
None of this is inherently misguided. People can and should grow. The problem is that our instinct to focus on the individual can lead us to overlook something equally consequential: the conditions surrounding that individual every day.
What if the people aren’t the problem? Or, more precisely, what if they aren’t the entire problem?
