The Leadership Mirror: Are Your Mental Models Holding You Back?

Last week, I wrote “Want to Grow Leaders? Teach Them How to Elevate Their Peers.” It challenged the mental model that leading by example alone is enough to inspire people to follow you. That raises the question of how many other mental models we hold that are worth reexamining. Leadership is often less about what we know than about the assumptions we no longer question. Let’s take a moment to look in the mirror.


Over time, success can harden into certainty. The leadership approaches that once helped us earn trust, drive results, or advance our careers gradually become ingrained mental models – internal beliefs about how leadership works and what effective leaders should do. Eventually, many of those assumptions become automatic. We stop evaluating them because they have proven reliable and have become part of our identity.
